I'm Alfred P. Sloan, Who the Hell Are You?

"The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation believes that a carefully reasoned and systematic understanding of the forces of nature and society, when applied inventively and wisely, can lead to a better world for all."

Sounds good so far, classic grant-maker, do-gooder stuff. Plus the MacArthur Foundation (the "Genius Grant" people) seems to like them. And, naturally, they underwrite some NPR programming. The interesting part will be looking into what kind of an impact pro-science organizations like this one (and others) actually have on research. Oh, yes, we will learn more about these guys...
